Corpuz wins women’s Public Links qualifier
Allisen Corpuz of Honolulu and Ciera Min of Hilo took the top spots at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links sectional qualifier Saturday at the Poipu Bay Golf Course on Kauai, earning spots in the championship.
Corpuz shot a 4-over 76 to earn medalist honors, finishing two shots ahead of Min. Zoey Akagi-Bustin of Wahiawa earned the first alternate spot and Rynae Baca of Cedar City, Calif., took the second.
The U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship is June 17-22 at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla.
Alvarez qualifies for NCAA championships
University of Hawaii triple jumper Amanda Alvarez set a personal best on the final day of the NCAA West preliminary round on Saturday in Austin, Texas, to easily qualify for the national championships.
The senior had a leap of 43 feet, 73/4 inches to finish in fifth place. The top 12 in the event qualified for the NCAA championships, June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.
UH coed sailing team goes 2-8
The University of Hawaii coed sailing team was eliminated from title contention after winning just two of its 10 races on the first day of the ICSA APS Team Race National Championship on Saturday in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The Rainbows stood in 12th place, with two more days of competition remaining. Brown, Stanford and Yale each had 8-2 records to lead the 14-team field.
Phillips earns bronze at Golden Gloves event
John Phillips, a Leilehua High graduate and a firefighter with the City and County of Honolulu, received a bronze medal and sportsmanship award in the 178-pound weight division at the National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions, which was held May 13-18 in Salt Lake City.
Phillips won three fights before falling to eventual champion Steven Nelson of Colorado-New Mexico in the semifinals.
Rita to compete in national rodeo finals
Shelby Rita of Sunset Beach will compete in breakaway roping at the College National Finals Rodeo, June 9-15.
Rita, who recently graduated with an associate of arts degree in business administration from Mesalands Community College, is ranked seventh nationally and second in the Grand Canyon region. She helped the Mesalands women’s team win the 2013 Grand Canyon regional championship.
