The 2013 Hawaii baseball season came to an end in a fashion fitting for the entire year.
The Rainbows were held to two runs or less for the 24th time in 51 games, falling 4-2 to UC Riverside in the rubber game of the series on Saturday in Riverside, Calif.
Hawaii was held to seven hits and finished 11-16 in its first year in the Big West Conference.
The Rainbows went 16-35 overall, matching the 2002 team that went 16-40 for the lowest victory total since 1974.
Pi’ikea Kitamura ended his four-year Rainbows career with three hits, and Kalei Hanawahine went 2-for-4.
The Rainbows scored just two runs in each of their final two games of the season to drop the series against UC Riverside (14-32, 10-17).
UH won three of its nine series in conference play and was swept twice.
"The focus now is really on what it’s been the last few weeks and that’s recruiting and preparing for the draft and making sure we have our lists prepared for when the draft comes if guys sign," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said over the phone after the game. "Regardless of what type of season you have, you’re always looking at the end of the season at where you can improve and this year is easy.
"We need to get better offensively and get healthy on the mound."
Junior Matt Cooper (3-8) was one of three UH pitchers to go at least 86 innings this year.
The right-hander, who will take the summer off to rest, gave up all four UC Riverside runs on six hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Cooper struck out two to finish with a team-best 69 in 86 innings.
"The numbers, aside from the win-loss record which pitchers don’t have the most control over, are outstanding for Coop," Trapasso said. "We look for him to continue what he did this year."
Cooper and relievers Lawrence Chew and Scott Kuzminsky are the only pitchers still with the team in Riverside, Calif., expected back next year.
Trapasso said sophomore Scott Squier, who was suspended indefinitely three weeks ago, is expected to return for his junior season.
Marc Flores drove in both UH runs and sophomores Stephen Ventimilia and Kaeo Aliviado each singled and scored.
