A 42-year-old Kailua man was arraigned Thursday on charges of second-degree attempted murder in a case involving an early-morning pistol shot on a residential street.
A police affidavit filed in District Court sheds no light on a motive for the gunplay.
Bail was set at $500,000 for Jon Frederick Rapozo.
At about 4:30 a.m. Monday, Rapozo, in a stolen truck, drove up to two men talking next to a truck on Iana Street in Kailua, according to the affidavit.
Rapozo apparently knew one of the men, Sonny Kaloi, who introduced him as “Rap” to the third man, John Stancil.
Stancil asked Rapozo if he could have a private conversation with Kaloi, at which point Rapozo drove off, said the affidavit. But he returned shortly, driving “at a high rate of speed,” and stopped the truck
facing Stancil’s, about 15 feet away.
Stancil stepped into his truck, and Rapozo got out of his, holding an “object wrapped in white” in his right hand, and started walking toward Stancil.
Realizing “something was amiss,” Stancil started to drive off, but as he passed Rapozo there was a muzzle flash from Rapozo’s hand and the sound of a shot.
The shot went through the truck’s windshield, and police later found a hole in the rear upholstery and an expended bullet near the hole. A Smith & Wesson .40-caliber shell casing later was found on Iana Street, the affidavit said.
Stancil drove to the Kailua Police Substation, where he met his brother, Mike Miske. Later, Stancil identified Rapozo in a photographic lineup.
Officers arrested Rapozo on Wednesday near Castle Medical Center.
Rapozo has a lengthy criminal record that includes convictions of first-degree burglary and assault against a law enforcement officer.
But Stancil has had his own brushes with the law.
On Dec. 15, Stancil and Miske allegedly assaulted a 40-year-old man in Kakaako. When a woman tried to intervene, Stancil allegedly assaulted her.
Both have pleaded not guilty.
Miske is due to go to trial in July in connection with an alleged assault on Washington Redskins tackle Trent Williams at M Nightclub on Jan. 25, two days before the Pro Bowl.
