It might not be official, but all signs indicate that Greg Tacon will be the next head boys basketball coach at Kamehameha Schools.
The main man at Moanalua since 2006, Tacon can’t confirm he is leaving the program, but school officials said Thursday that it is accepting applications for the boys basketball coaching position.
Tacon wouldn’t comment on Tuesday about his pending hire, but he spoke about the possibility on a radio sports show on Wednesday. On the "Moanalua Basketball" Facebook page on Wednesday, Tacon shared the news of his resignation from Moanalua and hiring at Kamehameha. He signed off, "Always a Mene."
As of Thursday, he said he still couldn’t discuss the Kamehameha position since the hiring is not official. Tacon’s teams at Moanalua, and at Punahou before that, have been regularly in the Star-Advertiser Top 10. He was released from Punahou in 2006, in effect trading places with Dan Hale, who went from Moanalua to the Buffanblu.
Moanalua’s team is currently practicing and preparing for summer league games. Tacon’s squad went 19-10 last season and finished sixth in the Top 10. Na Menehune lost to eventual state champion Kalaheo 56-52 in overtime in the OIA Red title game. They lost to Pearl City in overtime in the opening round of the state tournament.
Julian Nakanishi guided Kamehameha to a 16-10 record last season. The Warriors finished eighth in the Top 10.
