Errant tree limbs cut residents’ electricity
A tree-trimming accident resulted in a loss of electricity for 827 Hawaiian Electric Co. customers in Sunset Beach on Saturday.
According to HECO, falling tree limbs knocked down a power line on Ke Waena Road, resulting in a power outage that began at 11:11 a.m.
A HECO repair crew restored power at 1:46 p.m.
Driver killed in ejection from truck
A man was killed Saturday when the dump truck he was operating ran off Kaiminani Drive in Kona, flipped and hit three cars and a utility pole.
The man, who was ejected from the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. Police closed the road for several hours for investigation and clearing.
No other injuries were reported.
Grease buildup blamed in blaze at supermarket
Maui firefighters extinguished a fire in the exhaust vent of the Lahaina Safeway Bakery on Saturday morning.
Firefighters call- ed to the scene at 8:22 a.m. saw smoke coming from the bakery’s exhaust vent system.
No flames were visible inside the bakery, but firefighters discovered a smolder-ing fire in the exhaust vent above the oven.
Store personnel and customers were evacuated and firefighters extinguished the fire by 9:28 a.m.
The fire was contained within the vent and no damage or injuries were reported.
The fire was blamed on grease buildup catching fire from the heat of the oven.
Customers and workers were allowed back into the store after the fire was extinguished.
