3 picked up in Makiki assault
Three men are in custody in an attack on a 24-year-man in Makiki late Wednesday night, police said.
Witnesses identified two 20-year-old men and an 18-year-old who together assaulted the victim, police said.
The three were arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault near the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl just after 11 p.m. Wednesday.
Man, 27, badly injured in attack
Police arrested a 49-year-old Makakilo man in the assault with a dangerous instrument Thursday of a 27-year-old man.
Police said the younger man suffered substantial bodily injury in the 7:46 a.m. incident.
The suspect was arrested at 9:30 a.m. on suspicion of second-degree assault at Kalauokalani Way in the Ala Moana area.
Small house damaged in blaze
Fire damaged a house behind a Thai restaurant in Wailuku on Thursday.
Maui fire officials said the fire was reported at 11:54 a.m. at 2119 Vineyard St.
Firefighters first arrived at the Saeng Thai Restaurant at 11:59 a.m., found the house burning and brought the blaze under control at 12:03 p.m.
The fire was confined to a bedroom in the 25-by-25-foot structure.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined but was likely accidental, a fire official said.
Damage to the structure is estimated at $12,000, and $3,000 to its contents. No injuries were reported.
Car passenger killed in crash
A 45-year-old Kawaihae man died Wednesday from injuries he received when the car in which he was a passenger hit the rear of a repair truck on Queen Kaahumanu Highway in Kailua-Kona.
Hawaii County police identified the victim as David Arbon. Arbon, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at 9:06 p.m. at Kona Community Hospital.
The driver, a 44-year-old Kailua-Kona woman, was being treated for serious injuries at the hospital. She was wearing a seat belt. Speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash, police said.
Police opened a negligent-homicide investigation, and an autopsy will be done to determine the precise cause of death.
Police said a 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser rear-ended a 2002 Chevy C7500 boom truck that was stopped in the outside lane as workers changed burned-out street lamps.
Two men with the boom truck were not injured in the crash, which occurred at 8:23 p.m. on Queen Kaahumanu Highway about 300 yards north of Palani Road.
Accidental fire destroys home
A home in Honokaa, valued at $275,000, was destroyed Wednesday by a fire caused by the accidental ignition of a propane gas tank, Hawaii County fire officials reported.
The fire at Paauilo Hui Loop was reported at 5:56 p.m. Wednesday and was brought under control by 6:47 p.m. by 14 Hawaii County firefighters. No one was injured.
The Red Cross said the fire left two persons without a home.
