Bad roads can be good for business
Former Big Five company Alexander & Baldwin Inc. probably had many reasons for buying locally owned construction company Grace Pacific Corp. for $277 million, but surely one of them must be that it is bullish on road paving.
Yes, Grace Pacific, which has 550 employees, is the state’s largest paving contractor, and its acquisition comes at a time when just about everyone on Oahu has been complaining about the poor condition of so many of our roads. Mayor Kirk Caldwell even risked political capital trying to raise taxes to pay for more road paving, and though he failed at that, thankfully, the fact remains improving Oahu’s roadways appear to be a political priority.
Thankfully.
Even YouTube has some rules
Tired of watching cute kitten antics, toddlers playing rock guitar or talking dogs? Doesn’t matter, in the wild world of YouTube, anything goes.
Then suddenly we discover there are rules, after all. The website took down the video of the folks accused of leaving $6 and then taking amulets by the dozen, from Kalihi Shinto shrine.
The video had breached one of the principles on the "Community Guidelines" section, advised that if the video subjects never agreed to be filmed, it could be removed as a privacy violation.
With YouTube, it seems, people do have a voice. Compare this to the sense of powerlessness many people feel after hearing about Prism, the National Security Agency program that has secretly scoured Internet and phone data. Complain about that and see where it gets you.
