Kauai police arrested a Lihue man on suspicion of driving under the influence Saturday after his pickup truck wound up in the ocean near Lydgate Beach, county officials said.
Police said the man, 38, was driving his truck on the beach in an area known as Kitchens, behind the Wailua Golf Course, when a wave struck it and pulled it out into the surf. He was alone at the time. Police arrived at about 4 p.m. to find the man uninjured outside his Ford F-150 truck, officials said.
Officers arrested him on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant, refusal to submit to a drug test and reckless driving.
Officials said he remained in police custody Sunday with bail set at $4,000.
Three tow companies assisted in removing the partially submerged truck, officials said.
