One person was killed and another was seriously injured Friday evening in a single-vehicle crash in Keaukaha on Hawaii island.
According to Hawaii County police, the car crossed the centerline of Kalanianaole Avenue at about 10:45 p.m., hit a utility pole and crashed into a rock wall.
One man was pronounced dead at the scene. Another male, believed to be a teenager, was taken to an area hospital. No other injuries were reported.
Woman allegedly threatened 2 at park
Police arrested a 48-year-old homeless woman who allegedly threatened two women in a restroom at a Waianae beach park Friday afternoon.
The suspect allegedly threatened a 21-year-old woman and a 25-year-old woman with an unspecified “dangerous instrument” during an oral argument, police said.
Officers arrested the suspect at 5:40 p.m. near Nani Kai Beach Park on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening.
Robbery suspect arrested after 9 months
Police arrested and charged a 32-year-old Kaimuki woman Friday in connection with the robbery of a Kahala retail store last year.
According to police, Irene Cox was stopped by a store loss prevention officer for shoplifting on Sept. 7 and used physical force against the officer to get away.
Police found her Friday at a Date Street home and arrested her.
Cox was charged with second-degree robbery. Her bail was set at $15,000.
Cane fires cause $45,000 in damage
Three sugar-cane fires that were intentionally set in central Maui last week caused an estimated $45,000 in crop damage, Maui fire officials said.
Maui fire officials said the fires destroyed 9 acres of sugar cane. They were set within an hour of each other beginning at 10:57 p.m. Thursday just south of Waikapu on Honoapiilani Highway. That fire was contained an hour later.
At 11:50 p.m. another cane fire was reported about a mile above the landfill beside Pulehu Road. That fire was contained at 12:07 a.m.
At 12:11 a.m., a third cane fire was reported on the south side of Kuihelani Highway, about 200 yards east of the Maui Lani Parkway intersection. That fire was contained at 1:50 a.m.
