Punahou freshman Mariel Galdiano shot 1-over 73 to tie for fourth and lead three Hawaii golfers into the match-play round of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla., on Tuesday.
The 14-year-old reigning state high school champion from Pearl City will face Ericka Schneider of Bradenton, Fla., in the round of 64 today.
Honolulu’s Allisen Corpuz (73-74—147, tied for 17th) will play Mariah Montoya of Lubbock, Texas, and Hilo’s Ciera Min (74-79—153, tied for 59th) will take on Annie Park of Levittown, N.Y.
Failing to advance after two rounds of stroke play were Honolulu golfers Kristina Merkle (78-81—159, tied for 110th), Ji Hae Lee (78-78—156, tied for 87th), Eimi Koga (79-82—161, tied for 122nd), Alice Kim (83-79—162, tied for 127th) and Hilo’s Nani Yanagi (81-82—163, tied for 132nd).
Round of 32 and 16 matches continue Thursday.
Komoto in Women’s Western match play
Honolulu’s Kacie Komoto shot a second-round 73 to tie for 11th on Tuesday and advance to match play in the 113th Women’s Western Golf Association National Amateur Championships in Dayton, Ohio.
The 2012 state high school champion and recent Punahou graduate will face Zoe Brake of Columbus, Ohio, in the round of 64 today.
Hayashi earns U.S. Senior Open berth
Kevin Hayashi birdied the second playoff hole to defeat Kirk Nelson at the U.S. Senior Open qualifier at Honolulu Country Club on Tuesday.
Hayashi and Nelson both shot 71. Nelson is the first alternate, with David Ishii earning second alternate after a playoff victory over Harry Ramirez of San Antonio.
The U.S. Senior Open will be played July 11-14 at Omaha Country Club in Omaha, Neb.
Ex-Wahine Ong to coach at Sacred Hearts
Kelly Ong, a former University of Hawaii Wahine volleyball player who’s held numerous volleyball positions on the high school level, has been named head varsity volleyball coach at Sacred Hearts Academy.
Ong recently served as an assistant varsity coach at Saint Louis and earlier in her career served as an assistant varsity coach at ‘Iolani. She also is the club director at Elite Sports Academy.
A graduate of Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland, Calif., Ong played for UH from 2003 to ’06 as a defensive and serving specialist.
Ioane to compete at USA Jr. Championships
University of Hawaii track and field athlete Charlinda Ioane will participate in the shot put and discus events at the U.S. Junior Championships this week at Drake Stadium on Drake University’s campus in Des Moines, Iowa.
The Kapolei High graduate is the first UH athlete to compete at the USA Junior Championships. Ioane, who just completed her freshman season at UH, will compete in the shot put on Thursday and the discus on Saturday.
The five-day meet is held in conjunction with the USA Championships. The junior championships consist of athletes ages 16-19, with the top finishers representing the U.S. at the Pan American Junior Championships in Medellin, Columbia later this summer.
