Parnaby named to Easton’s second team

University of Hawaii pitcher Kaia Parnaby added to her collection of postseason awards on Tuesday as a second-team Easton All-America selection.

Parnaby is the 14th Rainbow Wahine softball player to earn Easton All-America honors. UH has been represented on the team each of the past three years.

Parnaby, the Big West Pitcher of the Year, finished her senior season at 39-7 with a 1.52 earned-run average. She was named an NFCA third-team All-American earlier this month after setting UH and Big West single-season records for wins and strikeouts (342).

Parnaby helped power UH to a 45-13 season and the Big West title. The Wahine closed the season ranked 24th in the USA Today/NFCA poll and 25th in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25.

The left-hander is training with the Australian national team in preparation for the World Cup of Softball, July 11-14 in Oklahoma City. The team will also play in the Scotiabank Canadian Open Fastpitch Women’s International Championship in Surrey, British Columbia, on July 16-22.

Patacchia, Florence eliminated in Bali

Hawaii’s Fred Patacchia and John John Florence made it as far as the fifth round today at the Oakley Pro Bali surf contest in 4- to 5-foot waves in Keramas, Indonesia.

Patacchia placed second out of three surfers in the fourth round, advancing to the fifth, where he lost to Australia’s Mick Fanning 13.46 to 12.90 and was eliminated from the Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour contest.

Florence finished third in his three-man, fourth-round heat, and was greeted in the fifth round by reigning world champion Joel Parkinson of Australia, who scored two perfect 10s to eliminate Florence 20.00 to 19.20.

Kelly Slater, the 11-time world champion from Florida, lost to C.J. Hobgood in the fifth round and was eliminated.

Parkinson, Fanning and Hobgood are three of the eight surfers in the quarterfinals.
