2 hurt, one critically, in conflict on Big Isle
A man was critically injured when he was shot with a spear gun, and a woman was hit with a rock Tuesday night in the Puna district, Hawaii County police said.
Officers arrested a 49-year-old Pahoa man on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder. He was being held in the police cellblock.
Police responded to a 10:15 p.m. call of a man shot with a spear gun during a confrontation on Leilani Avenue in the Leilani Estates subdivision.
The victim, a 20-year-old Pahoa man, was taken to Hilo Medical Center in critical condition. He underwent surgery. Police did not say where he was wounded.
In the same confrontation, a 61-year-old woman was hit on one of her legs by a large rock, police said. She was treated at Hilo Medical Center and released.

Man trying to cross highway hit by truck
A man in his 60s was taken to the hospital in critical condition Wednesday after he was struck by a car while crossing Farrington Highway near the Maili 7-Eleven store.
Police said the pedestrian was not in a crosswalk when he was hit by a car driven by a Waianae man heading north on Farrington Highway near Maipalaoa Road. The accident occurred at 1:10 a.m. The pedestrian was walking toward the beach when he was hit.
