Snorkeling trip fatal for Tennessean
A 48-year-old Tennessee man died Wednesday while snorkeling off Kauai’s Na Pali Coast.
The visitor was part of a charter group whose boat stopped in an area off Nualolo Kai, a popular, tranquil and remote snorkeling spot.
At about 2:40 p.m. Wednesday, fellow swimmers found the man in distress and brought him to shore, according to the Kauai Fire Department. Bystanders performed CPR until fire rescue crews arrived and took him to the Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
His identity was not released Thursday. This was the 12th drowning on Kauai so far this year.
In April, Kauai County officials launched a short ocean safety video at Lihue Airport in response to 11 drownings since the beginning of the year, most involving visitors.
