Missing hunter triggers search
A woman who hurt her ankle while hunting in the Makawao Forest Reserve was airlifted to safety Thursday. But crews were searching for one of her companions, who had not returned to his truck by early evening.
Maui County fire officials said the woman, 28, was with two men when she injured her ankle around 1:15 p.m.
Firefighters from Makawao went to the top of Kahakapao Road and, with help from the county Water Department, set up a helicopter landing zone at the Piiholo Water Treatment Facility.
Crews had some difficulty finding the hunters, who were in a heavily forested ravine, said Maui fire Capt. Lee Mainaga. Eventually they were found, and the injured woman was airlifted to the landing zone.
She was assessed by an ambulance crew but chose to go with her family to get medical attention.
One of the men walked out of the trail with his dogs, but the other, who had headed back to his truck, had not turned up by early evening and was the subject of a renewed search.
