Hawaii island police are investigating three homemade bottle bombs found on Waiakea Intermediate’s campus Monday morning.
Although summer school is in session, no one was harmed.
According to a Hawaii Police Department news release, a school employee found two exploded bottle bombs — devices fashioned from plastic bottles containing chemicals or household items that can explode when mixed — and a third that was not yet exploded just after 8 a.m.
It was unclear when the devices went off.
Police discharged the unexploded bottle, which was found near Q Building on the mauka side of campus. The building fronts an access road that connects the intermediate school to Waiakea High. The road is separated from the campus by a fence.
The HPD has classified the incident as a Class C felony for possession of prohibited weapons.
The bottle bombs contained soda with Mentos brand candy, Department of Education spokesman Alex Da Silva said. The bottles can explode when shaken, according to Da Silva.
"It’s not a safety hazard," he said. "It’s an act of vandalism."
Da Silva could not confirm whether any summer school classes are held in the building. Summer school at Waiakea is held between 8 a.m. and noon, he said.
