4 people displaced by townhouse blaze
Fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of a $325,000 fire that destroyed a Pearlridge townhouse Friday morning, displacing three men and a woman.
The woman, 48, was taken to the hospital in serious condition to be treated for smoke inhalation.
The fire at the Pacific Village complex on Ualo Street near Pearlridge Center was reported at 6:48 a.m. It was brought under control 10 minutes later. Six pet cats were killed in the fire.
Capt. Terry Seelig, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman, said firefighters responding to the two-alarm fire used a foam system to rapidly knock down the fire, preventing it from spreading to other units in the townhouse complex.
Firefighters said the cause of the fire was an apparent electrical malfunction of a power strip on the second story of the three-story unit.
Suspect arrested in Kailua stabbing death
An apparent disagreement between two homeless men in Kailua District Park ended early Friday morning with one of them being stabbed and killed.
Police said two men were arguing at about 5:20 a.m. The victim, 48, was taken in critical condition to the hospital where he died.
The 58-year-old suspect, who has no local address, was located near the park after a witness went to the Kailua police substation to report the confrontation. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder.
10-acre grass fire prompts evacuations
Honolulu firefighters Friday night contained a grass fire that consumed approximately 10 acres and prompted the evacuation of several homes in Haleiwa.
The fire was first reported at 3:05 p.m. Eight houses on Kaika Place were evacuated as a precaution.
The fire was contained at 7:16 p.m.
None of the structures in the area was damaged. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Work furlough escapee is recaptured
Police have charged a 43-year-old man with escape after he was arrested for failing to return as scheduled from a work furlough assignment.
Police said Jason Gomes was considered an escapee when he did not return as scheduled July 6. He was located Thursday at a downtown homeless shelter and was arrested. He was charged Friday with second-degree escape. His bail was set at $20,000.
Man accused of sexually assaulting girl
Police arrested a 37-year-old Kaneohe man Friday for allegedly sexually assaulting his ex-girlfriend’s 12-year-old daughter.
According to police, the abuse occurred between 2008 and 2009. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of first-degree sexual assault.
