Motorcyclist is killed in collision with car
A 52-year-old Kapaa man was killed Saturday afternoon when the motorcycle he was operating collided with a sedan on Kuhio Highway.
According to police, the motorcyclist was heading north on the highway around 5 p.m. when the southbound sedan made a left turn toward Lanikai Street and collided with the motorcycle.
The motorcyclist, who was wearing a helmet, was transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the sedan, an 82-year-old Kapaa woman, was also taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Police closed Kuhio Highway in both directions while an investigation was conducted.
Kauai man dies after collapsing on boat
A Kapaa man died Friday after he collapsed on a fishing boat off Kauai’s south shore, a county spokeswoman said.
The 59-year-old man collapsed shortly after complaining of feeling faint, spokeswoman Sarah Blane said.
Friends on the boat contacted the Coast Guard by radio, but the man was unresponsive when Coast Guard personnel arrived to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Blane said he was taken to Nawiliwili Boat Harbor, where medical responders pronounced him dead.
The incident happened around 3 p.m. roughly 8 miles offshore. The man’s identity is being withheld until his family is contacted.
Big Isle brush fire prompts evacuation
Hawaii County firefighters battled a 100-acre brush fire Saturday that prompted the evacuation of the Lokahi Makai apartments in Kailua-Kona. The fire along Hulikoa Drive was first reported at about 11:15 a.m.
An evacuation center opened at the West Hawaii Civic Center. Police closed Hulikoa Drive while firefighters continued to try to contain the fire.
Fire crews put out 2 blazes in Makawao
Maui firefighters extinguished a pair of brush fires along Awalau Road in Makawao on Friday.
The first fire was reported around 10:15 a.m. in an open field with a patch of eucalyptus trees. Firefighters found the fire centered on an 80-foot tree, extending across a circumference of about 25 feet. The blaze was brought under control by 11:30 and fully extinguished shortly after 2 p.m.
While battling the first fire, firefighters noticed smoke coming from an area about a half-mile away. A tanker crew investigated and found fire in an area about 20 feet by 10 feet. The flames had engulfed a stand of guava trees.
The second fire was brought under control by 1:30 p.m. and extinguished around 3:30 p.m.
There were no injuries or damage as a result of either fire. The causes of both fires were undetermined and no evidence was found to link them, according to a Maui Fire Department report.
Suspect charged with arson in explosion
Honolulu police have charged a 25-year-old Kapolei man with first-degree arson for allegedly setting off an explosion in Enchanted Lake in May. The May 17 incident damaged a home belonging to a 55-year-old man.
Ozane Alexander Mosley Jr. posted $100,000 bail around 11 p.m. Friday, according to police records.
The suspect was found around 3:45 p.m. Friday at Straub Clinic and Hospital and arrested on suspicion of first-degree arson.
