Corpuz tied for 11th at U.S. Girls Juniors
Punahou sophomore Allisen Corpuz birdied three straight holes on the back nine to shoot a 2-under-par 70 in Monday’s opening round of the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship. The tournament is being played at Sycamore Hills Golf Club, in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Corpuz is tied for 11th going into today’s last round of qualifying. The top 64 advance to match play.
Corpuz is in her fifth girls junior. She played in the 2008 Women’s Amateur Public Links at 10, making her the youngest competitor in USGA championship history.
Hawaii’s other golfers struggled. Kristin Le and Alanis Sakuma shot 84 and are tied for 139th. Keilyn Ing is tied for 151st after an 88.
At the U.S. Boys’ Junior Championship, Punahou senior PJ Samiere shot 2-over-par 74 at Martis Camp Club, in Truckee, Calif. He is in a 23-way tie for 27th.
Parnaby helps Australia claim silver in Canada
Former University of Hawaii pitcher Kaia Parnaby threw four shutout innings in Australia’s 2-1 win over the U.S. National Team on Monday in a semifinal game in the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship in Surrey, British Columbia.
Parnaby gave up seven hits, struck out two and walked one in her start against the U.S. She didn’t figure in the decision and Australia pulled out the win in eight innings for its first victory over the U.S. since the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Australia moved on to the final against Japan and Parnaby entered in relief in the fifth. She stranded seven runners from the fifth through seventh innings to preserve a scoreless tie with the reigning world champions.
Japan broke through with two runs in the top of the eighth, the first scoring on an error, and held off Australia in the bottom of the inning to claim the tournament title.
Dorade clinches overall Transpac title
With about a quarter of the fleet still making its final approach to the finish in light winds, Dorade earned the top overall spot in the 2013 Transpacific Yacht Race today.
Using handicap ratings, Dorade’s corrected time was 2 hours, 30 minutes and 26 seconds ahead of Pyewacket. Alchemy, which challenged Pyewacket in the competitive Class 3 division, finished third.
The 52-foot wooden yacht, built in 1929, completed the 2,225-mile voyage from Los Angeles to Honolulu on Friday with an elapsed time of 12 days, 5 hours, 23 minutes and 12 seconds to claim the King Kalakaua Trophy awarded to the race’s first corrected overall yacht.
This is Dorade’s second Transpac win. It first won the Transpac in 1936.
Lopez joins Sea Warriors
Isaiah Lopez, a 6-foot-1 point guard from Agua Fria (Ariz.) High School, signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Hawaii Pacific men’s basketball team, Sea Warriors coach Darren Vorderbruegge announced Monday.
Lopez, an all-division and all-section pick, averaged 7.3 points and 8.6 assists and led the Owls to the Division II state playoff semifinals last year. He joins Colfax Nordquist of Elk Grove, Calif., and Connor Looney of Palmer, Ariz., as incoming freshmen for HPU’s 2013-2014 season.
Hawaii trio advance in Vans U.S. Open
Sebastien Zietz, Granger Larsen and Sunny Garcia advanced past Round 1 in the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing on Monday in Huntington Beach, Calif.
Larsen posted a 12.67 total to win his first-round heat, while Zietz (13.30) and the veteran Garcia (11:50) qualified second in their heats to advance to today’s second round.
Olamana Eleogram, Torrey Meister, Keanu Asing, Mason Ho, Ezekiel Lau and Fred Patacchia were eliminated in the windy afternoon conditions at Huntington Beach Pier.
