Corpuz ties for 17th in qualifying
Hawaii’s Allisen Corpuz hung on in steady winds Tuesday, firing a second-round 76 to earn a share of 17th in qualifying at the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship, at Sycamore Hills Golf Club, in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Corpuz finished qualifying at 2-over-par 146. Only eight girls finished under par, and the cut (top 64) came at 155.
Hawaii’s Alanis Sakuma (77—161), Kristin Le (80—164) and Keilyn Ing (88—176) did not advance to today’s match play.
At the 66th U.S. Boys’ Junior Championship, Kailua’s PJ Samiere shot even-par 72 to finish 22nd in qualifying, at 146. The boys are playing at Martis Camp Club, in Truckee, Calif.
Samiere will be a senior at Punahou this fall, and Corpuz a sophomore.

» Kacie Komoto shot 4-over 75 in the opening round of the 100th Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship and is tied for 32nd at Club de golf Beloeil in Beloeil, Quebec. Komoto won the State Women’s Match Play title last week. Kauai’s Kelli Oride is tied for 78th after an 80.
» ‘Iolani graduate Lorens Chan opened the 47th Pacific Coast Amateur with a 1-under 69 and is tied for eighth at Capilano Golf and Country Club in West Vancouver, B.C. Defending champion David Fink, Chan’s teammate on the 2009 state high school championship team, is another shot back.
» At the AJGA’s Bob Jones Junior Championship, St. Francis senior Hansol Koo opened with an even-par 71 at Yorba Linda (Calif.) Country Club and is four shots out of first. State high school champion Mariel Galdiano shot 74.
» In a sequel to last year’s final, defending champions Shawn McCauley and TJ Kua blew by seven-time champs Andrew Feldmann and Larry Stubblefield 6 and 5 in a quarterfinal of the OCC/Nike Golf Four-Ball Championship at Oahu Country Club.
McCauley and Kua meet 13th-seeded Kyle Kunioka and Ryan Acosta in a 7 a.m. semifinal today. Kunioka and Acosta beat Nick Foley and Kevin Shimomura 2 and 1.
David Ishii and Jerry Mullen play Kellan Anderson and Jason Jakovac in the other semifinal. Ishii has won this Aloha Section PGA event four times with David Chin — the last in 1998.
Ishii and Mullen won 3 and 2 over Kyle Trenholm and Mark Micale. Anderson and Jakovac ousted Lance Taketa and Jay Taise by the same score.
The final is scheduled to start at 11:45 a.m., following the semifinals.
Blanchard scores upset in California
Kauai’s Alana Blanchard defeated current tour rankings leader Tyler Wright of Australia in Tuesday’s first round of the Vans US Open of Surfing stop in Huntington Beach, Calif.
Hawaii’s Carissa Moore advanced directly into Round 3 by winning her heat, while Coco Ho, Malia Manuel and Leila Hurst pushed forward into the second round in waves ranging from 2 to 4 feet.
