A major thunderstorm with heavy winds, including a 71 mph gust, hit Las Vegas on July 19, resulting in snapped power poles, uprooted trees and flash floods throughout the city, including inside Strip casinos.
Despite the relatively short duration of the storm, a new daily rainfall record of .22 inches was set at McCarran International Airport, breaking the 1951 record of .17, and temperatures dropped more than 20 degrees in less than a half-hour.
Gilley’s at Treasure Island and the casino at Caesars Palace both sustained serious roof leaks that resulted in flooding. Severe power failures also plunged some Strip and downtown casinos into darkness for a period of time. Despite the damage citywide, no serious injuries were reported.
