Hawaii takes sixth in Junior America’s Cup
San Diego held on to win the 41st Junior America’s Cup, which ended Thursday at Wailea’s Gold Course on Maui. Hawaii took sixth, shooting a final round of 3-under-par 213.
The Hawaii team had a three-day total of 646. San Diego finished at 21-under 627 after shooting a final-round 212. That was four shots better than Mexico 2 (208—631) and nine ahead of Mexico 1 (209—636).
ILH champ PJ Samiere closed with a 6-under-par 66 to move into 12th place individually at 213. He finished 10 shots behind medalist Jonah Texeira (68—203), from San Diego.
Samiere was followed by Shawn Lu (73—215), Spencer Dunaway (74—218) and Keegan Loo (75—231).
In other golf Thursday:
» Mexico went wire-to-wire to win the Girls Junior America’s Cup by 16 shots at the University of New Mexico Championship Course in Albuquerque. Hawaii, which had won two of the previous three Cups, tied for seventh.
Hawaii shot a final-round 227 and finished at 33-over 681. It was led by Zoey Akagi-Bustin, who finished 19th at 74—225. She was followed by Kristin Le (74—228), Kaci Masuda (79—228) and Keilyn Ing (79—245).
Mexico’s final team score was 15-under 633. It was led by medalist Ana Paula Valdez (67—211).
» Pearl City’s Brittany Fan and Honolulu’s John Oda are in the top five heading into the final round of the 38th Junior PGA Championship, at Trump National in Potomac Falls, Va.
Fan fired a 2-under-par 69 and is three shots behind co-leaders Kristen Gilman and Abbey Carlson, who have a 54-hole total of 4-under 209. Punahou sophomores Allisen Corpuz (71) and Mariel Galdiano have a share of eighth at 214.
Oda, a Moanalua senior who won the 2012 state high school championship, shot 68 and is tied for fifth in the boys flight at 5-under 208. The leader is California’s Jacob Solomon, at 67—204.
» Scotty Yamashita fired a 5-under-par 67 in the opening round of the Army Invitational to take a three-stroke lead over David Saka and Jared Sawada. There is a three-way tie for fourth at 71, between Richard Hattori, Ryan Kuroiwa and S.J. Maeng.
Phil Anamizu leads the senior flight after an opening-round 70.
The second round is today at Leilehua, and the tournament ends Saturday.
HPU’s Hall of Fame to add five members
Hawaii Pacific’s Athletics Hall of Fame will swell to 15 members on Oct. 16 when its third class honors Les Akeo Jr. (baseball), Nia Tuitele and Debbie Sant’Anna (volleyball), Erik Sandblom (tennis) and Todd Iacovelli (cross country).

Big West tabs UH’s Majam for NCAA honor
The Big West Conference has nominated former University of Hawaii softball star Kelly Majam for the 2013 NCAA Woman of the Year award.
Majam completed her career this past spring as the Wahine’s all-time leader in home runs, doubles, runs scored and walks.
Hawaii Hilo hires first director of soccer
Maryland native Lance Thompson — 135-85-23 in 13 seasons as a college soccer coach, most recently at Cal State San Bernardino — has been named director of soccer at the University of Hawaii Hilo.
"We are very pleased to have found such a quality coach and individual for our first full-time soccer position," said Dexter Irvin, UHH athletic director.
