From finding the perfect dress and reception venue to choosing a cake, flowers and photography services, planning the ideal wedding is no easy feat. The Wedding Cafe aims to simplify the process with weekly themed workshops to help couples narrow their options.

The 10-week workshop series is scheduled twice a year, according to Tessa Gomes, general manager of The Wedding Cafe. The first session, which took place Wednesday, focused on choosing a venue for the reception. Couples could speak to vendors and sample food options as they spoke to representatives from various locales, from private estates to elegant hotels.

"The couples get tips on parking and other things that they might not have considered," Gomes said. "It’s more efficient; they get to visit with several different vendors all at the same time."

It’s important for couples to choose a location that suits their personalities, since "the venue sets the whole tone and feel of everything," Gomes added.

Local planners and professionals conduct the workshops, offering tips and expert advice, at 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays in the Ward Warehouse conference room, above The Wedding Cafe.

The workshops are free except for the "Cake & Catering Trends" session, which costs $10 per person and includes cake tasting. "Cake testing sessions can cost up to $40. During the workshop they can sample cakes from all different places and choose a style and flavor," she said.

The sessions also give the bride and groom "one-on-one" time with the vendors.

Gomes recommends that couples hire a coordinator.

"The coordinator can help you do everything. You don’t want to be running around on your wedding day. And you want family and friends to enjoy things, too."
