Robert Henry Lloyd traveled to more than 80 countries and preached on five continents for the Hawaii Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.
He was the conference’s executive secretary and ministerial director and served 21 years as pastor of the Kailua Seventh-day Adventist Chuch.
Lloyd died July 6 in a hospital in Hong Kong on his way to a mission in Rwanda. He was 64.
Since 2001 he had been affiliated with ShareHim, an organization that encourages lay people to adopt an evangelical lifestyle, and he had either preached in or coordinated numerous evangelistic campaigns in Third World countries, according to the church website, kailuasda.com.
Lloyd was on his way to Rwanda to manage 40 ShareHim International campaigns. He began feeling ill in South Korea, and when his flight landed in Hong Kong, he was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital. He was able to speak via videoconference with his family before he died.
"By the grace of God, the Hawaii conference president elder, Ralph Watts III, was traveling in Vietnam and was able to get to Hong Kong and join him at his bedside for a few hours," the website said. "Once there, Elder Watts read scriptures, and sang songs of hope and assurance before Pastor Rob drifted peacefully to sleep in our Lord."
Born in Aberdeen, Wash., Lloyd has been a pastor since 1971. He attended Walla Walla University, graduating with a major in theology.
He earned graduate degrees with high honors in divinity and public health from Andrews University Theological Seminary and Loma Linda University, respectively. He also did graduate work in social science statistics at the University of California, Irvine, and at the San Francisco Theological Seminary.
He wife, Margaret Harder Lloyd, is principal organist and music director at Central Union Church. She is co-owner of Bella Arte, specializing in European and Russian art of the 20th century.
Besides his wife, Lloyd is survived by brother Roger; sons Jeremy and Micah; daughters Giana, Oksana and Shavana; and five grandchildren.
