Corpuz leads U.S. Women’s Amateur
Honolulu’s Allisen Corpuz fired a 2-under 69 to seize the first-round lead Monday at the U.S. Women’s Amateur golf tournament in Charleston, S.C.
Corpuz, 15, a Punahou sophomore, drained three birdies against one bogey en route to the day’s only under-par round at the Country Club of Charleston. She leads a group of seven by two shots heading into today’s final round of stroke play.
Pearl City’s Brittany Fan and 2013 state high school champion Mariel Galdiano are among 11 players trailing Corpuz by three strokes. Honolulu’s Kacie Komoto shot a 6-over 77.
Six rounds of match play start Wednesday, with a 36-hole final on Sunday for the championship.
Ho earns spot in Senior Amateur
Carl Ho birdied the seventh playoff hole to beat Marshall Uchida and earn a spot in the USGA Senior Amateur at a qualifier Monday at Waialae Country Club.
Ho and Uchida both fired 1-under-par 71s after 18 holes.
Ho will make the trip to Wade Hampton Golf Club in Cashiers, N.C., for the Sept. 21-26 Senior Amateur.
Michnev is scholar athlete of year
Hawaii Pacific University’s Petr Michnev was selected as the PacWest Conference men’s tennis scholar athlete of the year by the league’s sports information directors.
Michnev, who returns for his senior campaign in September, was previously selected to the PacWest all-academic team and named to the Capital One academic all-district and All-America teams.
He was an ITA All-American in both singles and doubles for the Sea Warriors.
Hawaii boxers win world titles
Kawano Boxing Club’s Vincent Siordia and Wilson Savedra led a parade of Hawaii champions at the Ringside World Championships that wrapped up Saturday in Independence, Mo.
Siordia won the 11- to 12-year-old, 80-pound open division, and Savedra captured the crown in the 13- to 14-year-old, 125-pound open division.
Iasha King, also representing the Kawano club, won the 19-to-40-year-old, 119-pound novice division.
Other Hawaii boxers winning their divisions were Flipside Boxing Club’s Chaves Galdones and Bryer Nagahama; Waianae Boxing Club’s Eric Martinez, Asa Stevens and Alan Nomura; Pearlside Boxing Club’s Zachary Jones; Kira Demorales of the Boys and Girls Club of the Big Island; and Jason Ledward-Kaehu (unattached).
Waianae’s Braxton Lowry and Waimanalo’s Mervin Villanueva placed second in their divisions.
Costello wins decathlon in Italy
The Hawaii Masters Track Club’s Vince Costello won the decathlon in the men’s 60-64 division Sunday at the World Masters Games in Torino, Italy.
Costello posted an age-adjusted score of 6,663 points in the two-day competition to edge fellow American Russell Jacquet-Acea (6,577).
