Hawaii’s Brittany Fan and Kacie Komoto lost in Thursday’s second round of the 113th U.S. Women’s Amateur in Charleston, S.C.
Fan bogeyed the first hole and never caught up, falling to NCAA champion Annie Park, 2 and 1.
Komoto, coming off an upset of Canadian Amateur champ Brooke Mackenzie Henderson in the first round, lost to 2010 U.S. Girls Junior champion Doris Chen, 3 and 2. Chen, from Chinese Taipei, went 3 up at the eighth when Komoto bogeyed her third in a row.
Alex Ching ties for second
Alex Ching closed with a 4-under-par 68 Thursday to finish tied for second in the Golden State Tour’s stop at Salt Creek Golf Club in Chula Vista, Calif.
Ching, who won the 2008 state high school championship when he was a Punahou senior, had six birdies and two bogeys. He finished with a two-day total of 137, two strokes behind Nevada’s Scott Drew.
Hawaii team takes third
Hawaii’s Ji Hae Lee and Aiko Leong took third, behind two Southern California teams, Thursday in the Mary Cave Cup at Sycuan Resort in El Cajon, Calif.
Lee and Leong shot a 2-under-par 70 in the best-ball format for a 138, four shots out of first.
Hawaii’s other team — Mari Nishiura and Alanis Sakuma — tied for sixth at 71—141.
Individually, Lee (76—148) tied for third, with Leong (76—152) eighth, Nishiura (78—155) 12th and Sakuma (84—161) 20th in the field of 39 players and 19 teams.
Suppa finishes 14th
Punahou sophomore Kyle Suppa tied for 14th at the AJGA Junior in Ocala, Fla., Thursday.
The boys winner was Florida senior Taylor Funk, who closed with a 72 to finish at 6-under-par 210. Suppa was 10 shots back after a third-round 75.
Nelson takes 3-shot lead
Kirk Nelson fired a 2-under-par 70 Thursday to take a three-shot lead in the Aloha Section Senior Professional Championship at Poipu Bay Golf Course.
Nelson, a pro at Elleair Maui Golf Club in Kihei, played Poipu’s front nine in 3 under to move ahead of Andrew Feldmann and Mark Seki, who both shot 73. Larry Stubblefield is another shot back.
The winner after today’s final round, and the next two finishers, represent the Aloha Section PGA at this year’s $285,000 Southworth Senior PGA Professional National Championship. It will be Oct. 10-13 in Virginia.
