Hawaii team 3 strokes back at Hogan Cup
None of Hawaii’s four golfers could break par in Saturday’s opening round of the 45th Hogan Cup Matches, but the team is only three shots out of first going into today’s final round at Riverside Golf & Country Club, in Portland, Ore.
The low Hawaii scores came from John Oda and Ariel Elftman-Hanson, who both shot 2-over-par 74 and are tied for eighth individually. Oda had four birdies in the last six holes. Kyle Suppa shot 77 and Colby Takushi 78, for a team total of 9-over 225.
Northern California and Southern California lead the 12-team competition after shooting 222. Hawaii, in seventh place, is one of eight teams within six shots.
The individual leader is Southern California’s Hale Furey, at 70.
Teams from Northern and Southern California have been dominant the past 20 years, winning 16 Cups. The event brings together the best junior golfers from the Western United States and Canada.
Dolan claims senior men’s kayak title
Kailua’s Ryan Dolan took first place in the senior men’s K1 200-meter race on Saturday at the U.S. Sprint National Championships in Oklahoma City.
Dolan posted a time of 38.159 seconds, 0.877 seconds ahead of runner-up Chris Miller.
The Hawaii Canoe and Kayak Team finished in fifth place with 107 points. Gig Harbor won with 473.5 points.
St. Francis football comes to QB Club
St. Francis School president Sister Joan of Arc and football coach Mike Ulufale are among the guest speakers for Monday’s Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon at the Maple Garden restaurant.
This is the inaugural season for the Saints at the varsity level in football.
Also speaking will be amateur triathlete Rich Cline.
Lunch is at 11:30 a.m., followed by the program at noon. The cost is $15.
