New exhibits allow Lahaina to better tell its story

The whaling era in Lahaina was at its peak from 1830 to 1865. Displayed in one section of the Lahaina Heritage Museum are scrimshaw, board games, a sea chest, telescopes and tools used on whaling ships.

The lei niho palaoa (whale’s tooth lei) is made from finely braided human hair, a natural fiber tie and a carved walrus ivory pendant. It is 10 inches long and 4 1?2 inches at its widest point. It was created during the 1820s.

This display at the Lahaina Heritage Museum showcases household items used during the plantation era, including a kerosene stove made by the Perfection Stove Co. in the 1940s. The lei niho palaoa (whale’s tooth lei), left photo, is made from finely braided human hair, a natural fiber tie and a carved walrus ivory pendant. It is 10 inches long and 4 1?2 inches at its widest point. It was created during the 1820s.
