Judiciary warns of callers seeking Social Security numbers
The Hawaii State Judiciary is warning the public to be on the alert for an apparent telephone scam by a person claiming to be a court employee.
The Judiciary says the purported court employee leaves a voice mail message regarding a protective order case. The caller asks for a return call and requests additional information like a Social Security number and date of birth.
The Judiciary says employees don’t call parties to obtain Social Security number and birth dates.
Officials urge anyone who receives such calls to report them to the police.
The Judiciary said in a statement Friday it has been contacted by members of the public about the legitimacy of the voice mail message.

Earthquakes hit below Kilauea
Two temblors near the village of Volcano on Hawaii island were widely felt Sunday but caused no major damage.
A magnitude-4.8 earthquake hit at about 5:54 a.m. about 10 miles south of Volcano at a depth of 20 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
It was followed by aftershocks, including a magnitude-3.4 quake at about 6:07 a.m. in the same spot.
People from Captain Cook (on Hawaii island) to Honolulu, 215 miles away, reported on the USGS website that they felt it.
Scientists said the earthquake was centered in the Hilina region of Kilauea Volcano, almost directly under the Kulanaokuaiki campground within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientists said the earthquakes were likely caused by the weight of the island on the earth’s mantle.
"Despite their location near Kilauea’s summit, it’s unlikely that the earthquakes were volcanic in nature due to their depth, which is below, and offset from, the volcano’s known magma plumbing system," said Wes Thelen, the observatory’s seismic network manager.
Officials close beach at night
Kauai County will close a popular beach park at night because of crime, county officials said.
Hanamaulu Beach Park will be closed from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m. starting today.
"We’ve been experiencing chronic issues in this park, and community members, unfortunately, no longer feel safe there at night," said Lenny Rapozo, director of parks and recreation, in a news release.
Officials said vandals struck the park within a couple of days after community members cleaned it up in June. The old pavilion structure, which is attracting vagrants, will be demolished, they said.
