Kim seven strokes back at U.S. Amateur
Wailuku’s Taeksoo Kim shot a 2-over-par 72 Monday on the first day of stroke play at the 2013 U.S. Amateur in Brookline, Mass.
Kim, a St. Anthony High and Boise State graduate, sits seven strokes behind first-round leader Nick Hardy, 17, who fired a 5-under 65 at Charles River Country Club in nearby Newton, Mass.
Moanalua senior Brent Grant shot a 74 heading into today’s final round of stroke play.
Six rounds of match play start Wednesday, with a 36-hole final on Sunday.
Wahine No. 11 in preseason poll
The University of Hawaii women’s volleyball team is ranked No. 11 in the AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll released Monday.
The Rainbow Wahine open the season Aug. 30 against defending NCAA champion Texas, which earned the top spot with 55 of 60 first-place votes.
UCLA, which UH plays on Sept. 7, is ranked No. 12. The other ranked UH opponents are Wichita State (No. 24) and Creighton (No. 25).
The Wahine posted an 18-0 record in the Big West last season before losing in the second round of the NCAA tournament to Washington. They ended the season ranked 11th.
Hawaii hoops in ESPN tip-off marathon
The Hawaii men’s basketball team’s game against New Mexico State on Nov. 12 will be part of ESPN’s College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon.
The UH-NMSU matchup, the final game of the season-opening Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Rainbow Classic, will air live on ESPN2 at midnight.
The Rainbow Warriors and Aggies, former WAC rivals, will face off for the first time in two years.
UH has been a part of ESPN’s tip-off coverage for the past five years and has gone 4-1 in those games, including a 73-60 win over Houston Baptist last season in the Rainbow Classic title game.
Chaminade tabs Yuen as golf coach
Chaminade named Renee Yuen head coach of the men’s golf program.
Yuen was the women’s assistant golf coach at the University of Hawaii (2010-11) and an assistant varsity girls coach at Punahou (2012-13), her alma mater. She also was an assistant at Hawaii Pacific University last year and an assistant golf pro at several Oahu golf courses over the past six years.
Pearl City undefeated in pool play
Pearl City slammed Cape Breton (Nova Scotia, Canada), 11-1, Monday to stay undefeated in pool play in the Senior Little League World Series in Bangor, Maine.
After edging Martinez-Evans (Ga.), 1-0, on Sunday, Pearl City exploded for six runs in the eighth inning to go 2-0 in pool play. Chevy Sumile struck out eight over five innings.
Pearl City continues pool play today with a game against Illam Central (Makati City, Philippines).
Saints fall in Cal Ripken
The Honolulu Saints fell 8-5 to Crown Point, Ind., on Monday in the Cal Ripken Majors 12/60 World Series.
The Saints battled back to tie the score at 5 after falling behind early, only to see Crown Point score three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Saints fell to 1-2 and conclude pool play against Quincy, Mass. today.
Hilo falls in softball world series
Hilo’s 19-and-under Nobu Yamauchi team dropped a 4-3 decision Monday at the Reviving Baseball in Inner (RBI) Cities Softball World Series in Minneapolis-St. Paul.
Hilo scored a run in its last at-bat in the bottom of the seventh but couldn’t plate the tying run. They fell to 2-3 in pool play with one game remaining today.
