Those hungry for Panya Bistro & Bakery’s mix of savory and sweet have endured a long wait since the eatery closed its doors at Ala Moana Center in late April for its move to a new location.
The new Panya Bistro & Bakery at Hokua is now open on the site of the former P.F. Chang restaurant, in 3,200 square feet where beautiful Japanese-style cakes, pastries and confections are baked on site for hot-out-of-the-oven freshness. Inside, there’s more kitchen than seating, though the baking operation is hidden behind walls. To compensate for close quarters, there’s a screened patio for al fresco lunches and dinners.
The Euro-style decor of the new restaurant closely resembles that at Ala Moana, and it seems that all the menu favorites are back — at least mine are — as sisters, founders and co-directors Annie and Alice Yeung said customers won’t let them get rid of any of the dishes. These include spicy wontons, laksa and gyoza. The sisters have plans to add many more dishes.
On the downside for some, the new site doesn’t have the display space that allowed for a self-serve pastry format at Ala Moana, but away from the fast traffic of the mall, servers will be able to handle all pastry orders as people drop in for office omiyage, special-occasion treats or a quick bite.
For big orders, they’re hoping customers will call the day before to ensure availability of the desired products. Call 946-6388.
