Pearl City still unbeaten in pool play
Brandon Henderson pitched four innings, striking out six, and also tripled to help Pearl City defeat the Philippines 11-0 in pool play in the Senior Little League (14-16 years old) World Series in Bangor, Maine, on Tuesday.
Kawai Takemura doubled and drove in a run for Pearl City, which is 3-0 and plays host Maine on Thursday. The team has a bye today.
The semifinals will be on Friday and championship on Saturday.
Waipahu on to Legion World Series
Tanner Tokunaga doubled in two runs to highlight a six-run ninth inning as Waipahu clubbed host Eugene, Ore., 14-3, on Monday to clinch the Northwest Regional and advance to the American Legion World Series.
Bryson Yasui struck out six and scattered six hits to earn the complete-game win for Waipahu, which will make its way to Shelby, N.C., for the World Series, starting Friday.
Waipahu, which bounced back from a tournament-opening loss on Thursday to win five straight games, edged Cheyenne, Wyo., 8-7, earlier Monday to reach the final.
Saints lose in Ripken, but advance
Quincy (Mass.) defeated the Honolulu Saints 9-7 to finish pool play at 1-3 at the Cal Ripken 12/60 World Series in Hammond, Ind.
Despite the loss, the Saints finished third in their pool based on tiebreaker rules and will advance to single-elimination play against Kingsbridge, N.Y. today.
Trey DePonte went 2-for-3 with a homer and two runs batted in for the Saints.
2 Hawaii golfers out at U.S. Amateur
Maui’s Taeksoo Kim and Oahu’s Brent Grant both missed the cut at the 113th U.S. Amateur on Tuesday at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass.
Kim, a St. Anthony alum who just finished his eligibility at Boise State, shot a second-round 74 to finish 88th in stroke play qualifying, at 6-over-par 146. The top 64 advanced to match play. Grant, a Moanalua senior, had rounds of 74-89 to end up 300th in the field of 312.
HPU basketball program signs 2
The Hawaii Pacific University men’s basketball team has signed high school product Koree Cox and junior college transfer John Horowitz.
Cox is a 6-foot-3 guard from Vallejo, Calif., graduated from Benicia High School. He helped lead the Panthers to 18 wins and a tie for second in the Solano County Athletic Conference.
Horowitz, a 6-6 forward, is a New York native who spent last season at Monroe College (N.Y.), where he helped guide the Mustangs to a 24-8 record.
