Pearl City advances to Senior WS semis
The Pearl City Seniors defeated host Bangor, Maine, 11-1 in five innings to advance to the semifinals of the Senior Little League tournament.
Tyler Kushima struck out three and earned the win for the Pool A champions.
Pearl City will play Pennsylvania, the Pool B second place team, today. Should it make it to the championship game, it will be held Saturday and televised on ESPNU.
Oceanic makes Fox Sports 1 available
Oceanic Time Warner Cable announced a deal has been reached that will make the Fox Sports 1 channel available to subscribers when it debuts Saturday morning.
A spokesman for Oceanic, the state’s largest cable operator, said FS1, "will replace Speed on cable channels 214/1214. Customers who take our standard level of service (level that includes ESPN/TNT/CNN etc.) and have a digital box will be able to view the new channel."
Hawaiian Telcom said it will carry FS1 on channel 75/1075.
FS1 is the Fox Network’s planned 24-hour, all-sports competitor to ESPN.
Japanese Cultural Center books Kuhaulua
Former sumotori Jesse Kuhaulua will participate in a talk story, autograph and photo session at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii Aug. 30.
The two-hour event is free and starts at 5 p.m.
Benefits from a silent auction will aid the JCCH’s programs and services.
Kuhaulua, who competed as Takamiyama, was the first foreign-born sumotori to win the Emperor’s Cup, symbolic of a tournament championship in Japan’s national sport.
Wahine volleyball tickets on sale
Tickets are on sale for individual Rainbow Wahine volleyball matches. They can be purchased at the Stan Sheriff Center Box Office (Monday-Friday, 9a.m.-5 p.m.), online (etickethawaii.com) or by calling 944-2697.
Cost is $17 for lower level, and $12 (adult), $10 (senior citizen) and $5 (student) upper level. UH-Manoa students are free with a valid UH identification card.
Season tickets are still on sale. "Go Green, Save Green" discount tickets — select seats at half off and "mini-packs" of six matches for the price of three — are also available online through Aug. 28.
