German visitor dies during hike on Kalalau Trail
A 61-year-old visitor from Germany died Friday while hiking the Kalalau Trail, Kauai County officials reported.
The man was with a group of friends on the trail when he started feeling fatigued and collapsed.
A helicopter tour pilot saw what happened and radioed the Lihue Airport air traffic control tower.
At 5:30 p.m., the Fire Department Air-1 helicopter crew flew to a landing zone near the 8-mile marker and walked about a quarter mile to the scene.
The victim had been given CPR by his friends, but did not respond. He was flown to Princeville Airport, where paramedics confirmed he died.
Paddleboarders require rescue in high winds
Maui fire rescue personnel assisted in a pair of paddleboarding rescues off Papalaua Wayside Park in Ukumehame Friday.
The first incident, reported at 11:47 a.m., involved three 12-year-old girls on a paddleboard who were pushed out to sea by high winds.
Two male onlookers swam out to the girls as the rescue crews arrived and brought them back to shore uninjured.
Two hours later in the same spot, a 42-year-old woman from Italy also was pushed out to sea on her paddleboard.
A search found her sitting on her board about three-quarters of a mile offshore. She was uninjured.
