A Circuit Court jury will return Monday to resume deliberations in State Department special agent Christopher Deedy’s murder case after spending four full days this week trying to reach a verdict.

Circuit Judge Karen Ahn gave no reason as to why the panel would not meet today.

“The court declined to explain why the jurors will resume deliberating on Monday,” said Marsha Kitagawa, judiciary spokeswoman.

The panel deliberated the afternoon of Aug. 15 and Monday through Thursday this week.

Deedy, 29, of Arlington, Va., is charged with murdering Kollin Elderts, 23, of Kailua, early Nov. 5, 2011, at the McDonald’s restaurant on Kuhio Avenue in Waikiki.

Deedy, who is free on $250,000 bond, was here to provide security at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference.

The jury sat through 20 days of testimony over five weeks in the highly publicized trial.

The trial featured McDonald’s surveillance video recordings of the shooting scene, which were repeatedly shown to the jurors.

The panel also saw a cellphone video taken by a bystander after the shooting. Jurors have the option of reviewing the video recordings in the deliberations room.

The jury must decide whether to acquit or convict Deedy of second-degree murder, which carries a mandatory life term with parole.

The panel was not given the option of returning a conviction on the lesser offense of manslaughter, which carries a maximum 20-year prison term.
