School bells mark return of traffic

Classes resume at the University of Hawaii on Monday, so adjust your commuting schedule accordingly.

Students crowding their way to the Manoa campus can affect local travel times, so if you must be out on the road, be prepared to be flexible in your routes and your arrival times.

Monday’s final wave of back-to-schoolers also will include a last batch of private schools. Many resumed this week and last, and of course, public schools have already been back for about three weeks now.

Like we said, be prepared to be flexible — and, we should add, drive with aloha.

Needed: Artists with monumental ideas

What’s the going price these days for a monument or memorial for an iconic public figure?

Well, if it’s the late U.S. Sen. Dan Inouye or the late U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink, it’s a cool $250,000 apiece.

The two pieces of art were approved by the 2013 Legislature. That triggered the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts to call for applications from artists to propose sculptural designs; this request-for-qualifications phase is to establish a qualified pool of professional artists for consideration.
