Beverly Y. Kafentzis, who helped supply the University of Hawaii football team with players for nearly a quarter-century, died in Richland, Wash., on Friday, family members said.
She was 84.
Five of her sons (Mark, Kent, Kurt, Kyle and Sean) and three grandsons (Landon, Tyson and Mikhail) played for UH between 1980 and 2005.
In addition, Beverly and her husband, Andy, were a valuable resource for mainland families of new and prospective UH players, encouraging them to attend the school and counseling them on what to expect.
"We tell them it has been great for our family," she said in a 2004 interview.
"She was a big help to our program and very willing aid to some of our mainland families," said Bob Wagner, a former UH head coach and assistant for 30 years. "That was important in recruiting, when you are talking to parents about sending their sons several thousand miles away to school."
"The people of Hawaii have always had a special place in her heart for taking care of her boys," Kyle said.
Two sons, Mark and Kurt, played in the NFL. At one point, until an ankle injury put Kyle on crutches in 1986, UH played 70 consecutive games with at least one Kafentzis family member on the field, going 41-26-3 in the process. In a 1984 game at Fresno State, Kurt and Kent made interceptions, and another would have been one but Kyle was ruled out of bounds.
Even as residents of Washington state, Beverly and Andy rarely missed a game, sometimes driving as many as 285 miles in the pre-cable TV era to find suitable TV or radio reception of game broadcasts.
She is survived by Andy, 13 children, 35 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
One of them, Jordan High (Utah) junior quarterback Austin Kafentzis, passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more the day his grandmother died.
