Driver sought in murder attempt
Police are looking for a man whose vehicle allegedly struck a 24-year-old man early Thursday morning in Manoa Valley.
Police said the man is wanted for attempted murder.
The two men were involved in an argument about 2 a.m. when the man, driving a white four-door vehicle allegedly drove into the 24-year-old, who was "facing the oncoming vehicle," according to a police report on the incident.
The victim suffered a fracture to his right ankle, and was taken to a hospital where he remained for further treatment, police said.
Toddler struck by car died of head injuries
A 2-year-old boy who was fatally struck by a sport utility vehicle in Moiliili on Wednesday died of head injuries, according to the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office.
Filimone Asi died of cranial cerebral injuries after he was struck by a Toyota RAV4 on a paved area in front of his home, according to an autopsy report.
The SUV driver, a neighbor of the toddler’s family, was taking her daughter to school when she reversed out of her driveway located in a private lane on Kapiolani Boulevard near Kaaha Street. Police said she then drove forward and the vehicle struck the child, who was unattended at the time.
The manner of death was classified as an accident, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office.
Big Isle road closed during police search
Hawaii County police shut down a section of the Old Stainback Highway on Thursday morning while searching for a car theft suspect.
Just after midnight on Highway 11 in Panaewa, police tried to stop a black Toyota Tacoma pickup truck reported stolen in Hilo in July, but the motorist drove off.
When officers found the truck on an unimproved section of the highway in the Panaewa rfain forest, the driver tried to flee again, police said. But the truck got stuck in the brush, so the driver fled on foot, police said.
Police heard gunshots from the forest into which the suspect had fled, police said.
Officers secured the area and resumed the search in the forest during daylight hours.
The highway was reopened at 1 p.m., but the suspect remains on the loose and police are still investigating.
