3-lane spill freezes H-1 westbound traffic
Thousands of westbound motorists on the H-1 freeway endured maddening delays Saturday after a truck spilled a cement mixture over three lanes near the Aiea Heights overpass.
Police said the spill occurred around 2:50 p.m.
Traffic backed up for miles the rest of the afternoon and into the evening as six lanes merged into one.
All westbound lanes reopened at 7 p.m. after a road crew cleaned up the mess.
A Honolulu Fire Department spokesman said the spill was bigger than officials initially thought. As of 3:30 p.m., four engine companies, a ladder truck, a tanker and a battalion chief had responded.
5 people hospitalized after 3-car accident
Honolulu police closed Kalanianaole Highway between the Makai Pier and the Makapuu lookout for more than an hour after a three-vehicle accident Saturday afternoon.
Police said the crash happened just after 1 p.m. near Makapuu Beach. The highway was reopened by 2:30 p.m.
A Honolulu Fire Department spokesman said the three-vehicle crash involved six people and that five of those people were transported for treatment: two in serious condition to the Queen’s Medical Center and three in less serious condition to Castle Medical Center.
Those injured include a 13-year-old boy and at least one man and one woman of unknown ages, according to an Emergency Medical Services report.
It was the second time Saturday that the highway was closed due to a crash.
In the morning, police closed Kalanianaole Highway between Hanauma Bay and the Halona Blowhole lookout for more than an hour because of a motor vehicle accident.
The accident happened near the Koko Head shooting range at about 11 a.m. The road was reopened before 12:30 p.m.
2 near-drownings reported across Oahu
Paramedics took a man in his 30s to the hospital in critical condition Saturday after an apparent near-drowning at Hanauma Bay.
An Emergency Medical Services report said the incident happened at about 11:15 a.m. at the popular snorkeling beach park.
Later on in the day, paramedics transported a 37-year-old man to an area hospital in critical condition after he nearly drowned at Kalama Beach Park in Kailua. The incident occurred at about 4 p.m.
Man arrested for DUI, prohibited firearm
Police arrested a 29-year-old Waipahu man Friday evening for allegedly driving under the influence with a prohibited firearm in the vehicle, according to police records.
Police stopped the man on Kamehameha IV Road in Kalihi just before 5 p.m. for an alleged traffic violation and arrested him on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant, according to police records.
He was also arrested on suspicion of possession of a prohibited firearm, based on unspecified items officers found inside the vehicle, police said.
The man remained in custody Saturday.
