Going into his final season at McKinley, Mathias Tuitele-Iafeta was encouraged to make the most of the time he has left on the field.

He didn’t leave the Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium field all that often in the Tigers’ 35-0 win over Kaimuki on Saturday.

235-pounder started at middle linebacker, ran in two touchdowns on offense, handled the Tigers’ punts and kickoffs, returned two punts and kicked two extra-points.

"Coach said it’s senior year so just try to go out with a bang and just do what I can," Tuitele-Iafeta said. "I told Coach to put me wherever he needs me. I just had to fulfill the job. Senior year you have to go after it."

Tuitele-Iafeta certainly wasn’t alone in multi-tasking for the Tigers, who improved to 2-0 in the OIA Red East and 3-1 overall.

McKinley running back/cornerback Gerime Bradley rushed for 87 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries.

Denzel Kalahiki-Gasper, the Tigers’ starting quarterback and free safety, completed 10 of 16 passes for 129 yards with a touchdown pass to Malik Kuhia, who also played in the secondary.

"That’s the only way we know who to do it," McKinley coach Joe Cho said. "Certain guys do play both ways, but we practice that. Those guys have been doing it since they were freshmen. It’s nothing new to them."

On a sweltering late afternoon at Roosevelt, Kalahiki-Gasper led the Tigers on a 10-play scoring drive on their first possession of the game. Three plays after Kani Kuhia’s 31-yard reception, Tuitele-Iafeta took the handoff on a draw play and bulled into the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown run.

"Everybody just had to stay hydrated and just stay focused," Tuitele-Iafeta said. "The key word for today was ‘focus.’ "

After a second-quarter interception by Marcus Aikau gave the Tigers possession at the Kaimuki 27, Kalahiki-Gasper capped the four-play drive with a 4-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Malik Kuhia in the right side of the end zone.

Bradley rushed for 81 yards in the second half, 14 coming on a third-quarter touchdown run though he appeared to get wrapped up several times along the way. Tuitele-Iafeta and Bradley both added scoring runs in the fourth quarter, the last set up by Chevas Pacheco’s blocked punt.

Kaimuki, which has depth issues with a 33-player roster, fell to 0-2 in the OIA Red East a week after a loss at Kahuku.

"We played two very physical teams in a row," Kaimuki coach Clint Onigama said. "Our boys are always up to the challenge; unfortunately we fell short tonight. But I’m proud of these boys no matter what, because one thing I know they’re always going to do is play their hearts out for us."
