In about 40 minutes, No. 5 Mililani served notice it’s still a force to be reckoned with in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West.

The Trojans tossed up 14 aces and handled Waipahu with little trouble, 25-8, 25-18 on Wednesday night at the Trojans’ gym.

During a 10-0 run in Set 1, senior hitter Ashlee Vaoifi had all six of her aces as Marauders were sent scrambling for shanked balls.

"We focus a lot on it, serving and serve-receive," Mililani coach Val Crabbe said. "The serving’s the only thing you can control in the game. So you want to try to control it as much as you can."

Middle Kristen Miguel added four aces, including three straight in Set 2 to help put the match away. Kayla Magbaleta and Jayierra Kapowai added two aces apiece.

That was most of the offense required of Mililani (2-0), which won the Red championship over perennial East contender Kahuku in 2011.

The best offense for Waipahu (1-2), a young White Division team, was its block in the first 10 points of both games, but that would not last. "They came out strong. I’m going to be honest, we kind of underestimated them for a second," Vaoifi said. "But we came out hard in the end, and I’m glad with that."

Senior setter Jordyn Keamo had 10 assists in directing most of the Trojans’ offense. Vaoifi was a deadly target from all corners, but 6-foot-1 senior Sarah Liva was viable too with four kills from the middle.

Next up for Mililani on Saturday: Kapolei, the Trojans’ first Red West opponent.

"We still have work to do, game by game," Crabbe said. "We’re respecting all the teams we have to play in the West. … Everybody gets better as it starts to progress, so we have to stay focused."

The Marauders trailed 23-10 in Set 2 but earned a few positive vibes going into their next match with an 8-1 run to make the final score more respectable.

Malaeotanifa Tagovailoa led the Marauders with four kills.
