After surging through pool play with an 8-1 record, the top-ranked U.S. women’s national volleyball team stumbled last week at the FIVB World Grand Prix in Sapporo, Japan.
Team USA dropped its first four matches in the final round before beating Japan, 17-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-17, 15-12, Sunday to finish sixth. The U.S. was trying to win the annual competition for a record fourth time.
American Alisha Glass was named the tournament’s Best Setter. Kaneohe’s Tamari Miyashiro did not play the final match.
Brazil won the gold medal with a 25-15, 25-14, 25-20 victory over China. Both teams were unbeaten going into their final match of the round-robin format. The top two teams both swept the U.S., which also lost to Serbia and Italy.
Former Olympian Karch Kiraly is in his first year as the U.S. coach. Hilo’s Reed Sunahara, Kiraly’s teammate at UCLA, is his assistant.
