Acoba picked for judicial excellence award
Associate Justice Simeon Acoba of the Hawaii Supreme Court has been selected for a judicial excellence award by the American Judicature Society.
Acoba, who is required to retire next year at age 70 under the state’s mandatory retirement provision, has been chosen to receive the Ninth Annual Dwight D. Opperman Award for Judicial Excellence, according to the society.
In nominating Acoba, Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald said Acoba has served as a state judge for nearly 35 years.
"I believe his extensive judicial experience, commitment to public service, and leadership in the areas of access to justice makes him an excellent candidate for this award," the chief justice said.
Acoba has served on the high court since 2000.
The society is a nonpartisan, national organization that seeks to improve the justice system.
