Cal State Bernardino sweeps Chaminade
Cal State Bernardino topped Chaminade 1-0 in women’s soccer on Monday at the Saint Louis School field.
It was the home opener for the Silverswords, who dropped to 0-2.
Kiana Quarles scored the lone goal of the game for the Coyotes (2-1) in the 70th minute off a corner kick from Soleil Hall.
Chaminade’s Lauren Ishii made five saves in the loss.
>> In the men’s game at Saint Louis, Juan Gonzalez and Tigran Tiraturyan scored two goals each to lead the Coyotes to a 4-0 victory over the Silverswords.
Nick Jetter made seven saves in his collegiate debut for Chaminade.
The Silverswords’ best chance to score — a Nika Sandadze header — was turned away by Cal State San Bernadino goalkeeper Roberto Gonzalez.

BYUH’s Chen earns weekly honor
Brigham Young-Hawaii junior hitter Shih Ting Chen, who has led the Seasiders to a 5-0 start this season, was named the PacWest’s first player of the week this volleyball season.
Chen had 93 points, with 83 kills, six aces and four total blocks. She averaged 5.19 kills, hitting .369, and added 59 digs to help first-year coach Mona Afalava Ah-Hoy make a successful debut for BYUH.
UHH’s Trevino-Scott freshman of week
Hawaii Hilo outside hitter Kyndra Trevino-Scott was named the inaugural Freshman of the Week after helping the Vulcans start the season 4-0.
The Penryn, Calif., native hit .461 in 15 sets, with 49 kills and 91⁄2 blocks.
Honor roll
Ying Chun Chen, BYUH: The junior setter and preseason conference player of the year had 174 assists in 16 sets, averaging 10.88 assists per set for the No. 5 Seasiders (5-0).
Pomai Recca, HPU: The freshman outside hitter out of Kamehameha helped the Sea Warriors to a 4-0 start with 57 kills, an ace and 31⁄2 blocks.
Seasiders remain at No. 5 in poll
Brigham Young-Hawaii was ranked No. 5 in the first AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 poll released Monday, matching the 5-0 Seasiders’ rank in the preseason rankings.
BYUH received one first-place vote and was the only Hawaii D-II team in the poll. Tampa (4-0), with 36 votes, was No. 1, followed by Minnesota-Duluth (4-0), Nebraska-Kearney (4-0) and Concordia-St. Paul (4-1).
PacWest member Fresno Pacific (3-0) was No. 10.
MEN’S SOCCER
Roosevelt grad Tsuruoka cited
Notre Dame de Namur junior goalie Jay Tsuruoka, a Roosevelt High graduate, was named the conference’s inaugural defender of the week in men’s soccer.
Tsuruoka allowed just two goals with 11 saves for the Argonauts (1-1), who fell to Cal State Monterey Bay 2-1 in overtime and shut out Cal State East Bay 1-0.

Chris Pineda, BYUH: The junior goalie had two saves in the Seasiders’ 0-0 double-overtime draw with Cal State San Bernardino.
Felipe Silva, HPU: The junior forward scored two goals in the Sea Warriors’ 4-2 nonconference win over Chaminade.

Kevin Miller, BYUH: The junior led the Seasiders to a third-place finish at the Chaminade Invitational, finishing fourth overall with a 5-kilometer time of 15:56.
Fermin Murillo-Villagran, HPU: The junior helped the Sea Warriors to a second-place finish at the Chaminade Invitational by finishing second in the 5K event in 15:40.
Women’s honor roll
Kami Dixon, BYUH: The freshman finished seventh overall and was the first Seasider to finish in the 5K dual meet against Alaska Anchorage, coming in in 19:32. She also placed 10th overall for runner-up BYUH at last Saturday’s Chaminade Invitational with a 19:53 time on the 5K course at Central Oahu Regional Park.
