Hawaii athletic director Ben Jay has given six UH head coaches one-year rollover extensions to their existing contracts, he said on Tuesday.
Coaches with the already completed rollovers through 2014 are: Michele Nagamine (soccer); Carmyn James (cross country/track and field); Andy Johnson (sailing); Ronn Miyashiro (men’s golf); Lori Castillo (women’s golf); and Mike Baker (cheerleading).
"We had a number of coaches who were coming due at the end of June and in July, and in Michele’s case in mid-December," Jay said. "What I had our people do was just roll those over for another year, in terms of their contracts. It would give me time to evaluate those coaches. … I wanted to take more time to go see them."
A group of six more coaches — Gib Arnold (men’s basketball); Mike Trapasso (baseball); Charlie Wade (men’s volleyball); John Nelson (men’s tennis); Maureen Cole (water polo); and Victor Wales (swimming and diving) — have contracts that expire in 2014.
No new contract or extension has been finalized for any coach in that group, Jay said. But in Arnold’s case, he said "It’s something I want to get done sooner than later."
"I’m working on the draft of the contracts, so I have not prepared any contracts for anybody right now," he said.
At least some of the coaches with contracts expiring in 2014 — including those who just received a rollover — will receive a redrawn contract between two and five years in length. The length given could vary from coach to coach, Jay said.
"I’ve gone back and forth between two, three, and five years," he said. "And so I’m trying to figure out which is the right realm for us and the University of Hawaii."
Jay is in the process of reworking contract language with stipulations about student-athletes’ academic performance and graduation rates.
"I want to revisit the language to reflect on the values of the department … and make sure we’re doing it right, and let the bonus structure reflect that as well," he said.
The language or salaries did not change for the coaches who received the one-year rollovers in the past few weeks.
For Nagamine, who is in her third season, the short-term extension was satisfactory. She’s working toward a finish in the Big West Conference higher than last year’s sixth place.
"We haven’t done enough to say, ‘Give me this, give me this, give me that,’" she said. "I’d rather have my actions speak. The next time our negotiation will be a lot different.
"I think I did enough in my first two years (5-12-1 in 2011, 8-9-3 in 2012) to turn things around," she added. "The crowd’s back at Waipio (Soccer Stadium), 1,200 out there for our games. They can see we’re heading in the right direction, but at the end of the day we’ve got to win."
Women’s basketball coach Laura Beeman is in the second year of her three-year contract. Jay has said he wants to give Beeman a raise and new contract coming off her 17-14 (13-5 Big West) first season, but it hasn’t been finalized.
"No, not yet," Jay said. "But Laura and I have been talking."
