Minaya leads Boxers to victory
Pacific (Ore.) senior P.J. Minaya (Hanalani ’10) finished 19-for-29 for 206 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Boxers to their first season-opening victory in 23 years on Friday night.
Minaya is one of 34 Hawaii players on the Boxers roster. Twelve played on Friday night as Pacific (Ore.) went on the road to defeat Adrian, 20-10, for its first victory in a season opener since restarting the program in 2010.
Adrian, the defending Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion, received votes in the first D3Football.com Top 25 poll before losing to the Boxers, who are 4-23 over the past three years.
Receiver Jordan Fukumoto, a 2010 Saint Louis graduate, caught a 42-yard touchdown pass from Minaya in his first game back from a broken leg, which caused him to miss almost all of last season.
Senior Aaron Victorino (Kauai ’10) started at right tackle, while Landon Aano (Kamehameha ’10) got the nod as one of the two starting defensive tackles. Aano made one tackle for loss, while redshirt junior Chris Santiago (Saint Louis ’10) recorded two tackles in his start at linebacker.
Freshman Trey Kodama (Kamehameha ’12) and linebacker Justin Revilla (Mililani ’12) came off the bench to record a solo stop apiece, while quarterback T.C. Campbell (Kamehameha ’10), receivers Darin Kamealoha (Hanalani ’10) and Kelson Kawai (Kohala ’10), lineman Nicholas Schilla (Punahou ’12) and defensive back Kamu Morita (Kamehameha ’10) also saw playing time.
Entire school will watch Hein, Luczak
An entire school in Hawaii will be tuned in when the Air Force and Navy women’s volleyball teams square off today in the second annual Service Academy Challenge at 1 p.m. Hawaii time.
St. Andrew’s Priory will screen the match on a wall at the Queen Emma library and will allow students to watch.
The Falcons (1-5) are led by junior middle Ayesha Hein, a 2010 St. Andrew’s Priory alumna who transferred from Hofstra after her freshman season. One of two team captains, Hein is third on the team with 45 kills and is hitting .368 with 25 digs, eight assists and six blocks in 24 sets played.
The Mids (3-4) feature freshman Sofia Luczak, a 5-foot-6 defensive specialist who graduated from The Priory in the spring.
