Unbeaten Vulcans blow by Silverswords

Hawaii Hilo scored four straight second-half goals to break a scoreless tie and beat Chaminade 4-1 in a women’s soccer game Saturday in Hilo.

Kristine Pasek netted the first goal of the game in the 49th minute for the Vulcans (3-0-1). UHH then got goals from Lauren Grace-Finley, Lindsey Poulson and Rheanna Perez to take control. Twyla Hamasaki scored the Silverswords’ lone goal on a penalty kick in the 79th minute.

Chaminade fell to 0-3.

» James Yamae scored 40 seconds into the game, and Thomas Murphy added a goal in the 29th minute as the UHH men’s soccer team beat Chaminade 2-1.

The Silverswords (0-3) got a goal from Tristan Hall in the 39th minute. The Vulcans improved to 1-1-1.

HPU volleyball team splits matches

A day after suffering its first loss of the season, the Hawaii Pacific women’s volleyball team lost another match Saturday before closing out the Seawolf Spike with a three-set victory.

In their first match of the day, the Sea Warriors (6-2) fell to Cal State Stanislaus 25-19, 25-19, 30-28. Pomai Recca led HPU with 18 kills and also had 21 of the team’s 93 digs.

The Sea Warriors then bounced back against Chico State (3-4), beating the Wildcats 25-16, 25-22, 25-20. Recca, who was later named to the all-tournament team, had 13 kills and 13 digs and Samantha Rummans added 10 kills.

Miyazato leads by 1

EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France >> With teen amateur Lydia Ko of New Zealand in pursuit, Mika Miyazato of Japan held a one-stroke lead after two rounds at the Evian Championship.

Miyazato shot a 2-under 69 and was at 8 under with a round to go in the fifth and last women’s major of the year. The four-round tournament was cut to 54 holes after rain left the greens soggy.

Former Honolulu resident Michelle Wie shot a 1-over 72 and is 2 under, tied for 14th place.

Suzann Pettersen of Norway bogeyed her two holes on the back nine but had four birdies — as did Miyazato — for a 69 to share second with Ko.
