The Hawaii soccer team heads back to the mainland with some painful perspective.
A 2-0 loss to Portland State to complete the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Soccer Classic on Sunday brought some lack of discipline and execution into focus at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
"We weren’t sharp. … We put together some good chances, but we were functioning at probably 70 percent of what we usually do," UH coach Michele Nagamine said.
"We might have taken them for granted a little bit. I told (our players), ‘You’re 3-2. You don’t do that.’ "
UH, now 3-3, outshot PSU (3-4) by a staggering 20-5, but only a select few of the attempts by the Rainbow Wahine were quality looks. The Vikings, meanwhile, made the most of their opportunities and got balls past UH redshirt freshman goalkeeper Erica Young — who started in place of Monk Berger for the first time since the season opener — in the 25th and 69th minutes.
The Wahine now prepare for their second road trip of the season, at Arizona and Northern Arizona on Friday and Sunday. They leave with a sour taste on their palates.
Portland State’s 4-5-1 formation, with a lone counter-attacking forward, gave UH fits as the Vikings pressured UH’s attackers and closed off pockets on the fly.
"We just had a bad game. It was a bad day," UH senior defender Malé Fresquez said. "We couldn’t connect. We were off-sync. We weren’t finding the pockets. We kind of got a little rattled up by their aggressiveness, and that threw us off in the beginning of the game."
Junior Krystal Pascua led UH with seven shots — three on frame — while junior Hayden Gibson added four off the bench. But Tiana Fujimoto, who scored a hat trick in Friday’s 4-1 win over Idaho State, was held without a shot, as was freshman forward Kama Pascua.
The four-team Outrigger title went to Florida Gulf Coast outright after the Eagles dismantled Idaho State 5-1 in Sunday’s opener.
UH was shut out at home for the third time this season after losing just once at WPSS in 2012.
Much like a 1-0 loss to UNC-Greensboro to open the season, UH outshot its opponent by a drastic margin, and had nothing to show for it.
But that’s where Nagamine ended the discussion.
"It didn’t feel like that at all. I felt UNCG was lucky to win. I felt Portland State deserved to win."
Vikings goalkeeper Caitlin Plese stopped 10 shots, setting a new career best.
In the 25th minute, PSU forward Aurora Bodenhamer scored unassisted on a shot to the upper left corner from just inside the 18-yard box. Young had no shot at it.
On the Vikings’ second goal, Young came out to snuff out an attack, but misjudged the distance and Melissa Bishop finished the play on a lob to the far post.
UH surprised a few people when it swept Oregon and Oregon State on its first road trip, but Portland State wasn’t about to be caught off guard.
"They beat Oregon, they beat Oregon State. We’re aware of those scores; they’re right down the highway from us," PSU coach Laura Schott said. "We knew a very good team (like UH) was going to get chances. When they get those chances, for us, it’s a matter of can we bend and not break."
