Snorkeler pulled from water ID’d as Colorado man
An 81-year-old man who died Sunday after he was found in waters off Makua Beach on Kauai has been identified as Leo Bennett of Colorado Springs, Colo.
Bennett had been snorkeling before he was spotted face down, unresponsive in the water. Bystanders pulled him from the water and to shore where they performed CPR. After lifeguards and fire rescue arrived, Bennett was taken to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy will be performed Thursday.
Quonset hut blaze sets off Maui brush fire
Maui firefighters extinguished a structure fire in Haiku on Monday along with the brush fire it ignited.
Fire officials said they arrived at a brush fire that began at about 11:30 a.m. and found an 800-square-foot Quonset hut engulfed in flames. The hut, at 250 N. Honokala Road, and its contents, along with two vehicles parked next to the structure, were destroyed. The structure fire ignited the brush fire, which burned about two acres between Waipio and Honokala roads.
Man charged in Lahaina bank robbery
A Lahaina man was charged Monday with last week’s robbery of Territorial Savings Bank. Bail for Turner Terry, 22, was set at $50,000.
The Lahaina bank was robbed Thursday by a man who first walked up to a teller, then left without speaking, police said. About 20 minutes later the man returned and placed a note on the teller’s counter. The teller gave him an undisclosed amount of cash. The man fled on foot.
2 hurt in crash of bus and moped in Liliha
Two people were injured, one seriously, after a bus and a moped collided in Liliha on Sunday night.
The moped driver, a 53-year-old man, was taken to the hospital in serious condition following the crash at North School and Liliha streets. The crash occurred at 11:23 p.m., according to Emergency Medical Services.
A 50-year-old woman who was a passenger on the bus suffered minor injuries.
