Pianist will perform in honor of teacher
Internationally recognized pianist Jeffrey Swann is returning to Hawaii to help piano teacher Ernest Chang celebrate 50 years of teaching young musicians with a recital Sunday at Orvis Auditorium at the University of Hawaii-Manoa campus.
Swann, a musicologist as well as performer, has appeared several times in Hawaii, both as a solo pianist and with the Honolulu Symphony. He has won competitions in Italy, Brussels and New York, and finished third in the 1977 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, among many other honors.
He has recorded Beethoven, Rossini, Chopin and others for Agora Musica, an Italian label, and is now artistic director of the Dino Ciani Festival and Academy in Italy and a piano professor at New York University.
Chang has trained some of Hawaii’s finest young musicians, sending 10 to the Juilliard School. He and Swann studied with the same teacher at Juilliard.
Swann will perform Beethoven, Chopin and a Liszt opera transcription. The concert is at 4 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $15-$25. Call 536-0218 for information.
Seminar to discuss diabetic-alert dogs
Attention, diabetics who love dogs. A free informational seminar on diabetic-alert dogs is being held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday for diabetics and medical professionals at the Queen’s Medical Center Auditorium.
Diabetic-alert dogs are service dogs trained to notify their owners when their blood-sugar levels are askew, and are often able to do so faster than glucose meters.
Pro-Dog Hawaii and Country Canine Dog Training have invited guest speaker Ritz Martinez, a pioneer in diabetic-alert dog training, to talk about the program and what makes a suitable candidate to be paired with one of the canines.

Chefs to prepare tastes of the range
Dry-aged, grass-finished beef, plus locally sourced pork, lamb, mutton, goat and wild boar will be prepared by 35 isle chefs at the 18th annual Mealani’s Taste of the Hawaiian Range, 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island. Tickets are $40 pre-sale, $60 at the door.
Before the event, at 3 p.m., learn to cook pasture-raised beef at a demonstration by chef Hubert Des Marais of The Fairmont Orchid. Cost is $10.
