Kamehameha hires new baseball coach

Billy Pieper, a former two-sport standout at Kamehameha, will return to the Kapalama campus as the Warriors’ new varsity baseball coach, the school announced Tuesday.

Pieper succeeds Vern Ramie, who resigned from the position in June after 23 years as head coach.

Pieper, a 1996 graduate of Kamehameha, said contributing to the school was "something I felt a responsibility or kuleana to come back to do."

"I feel kind of a duty to go back and help kids … to not only become excellent baseball players, but excellent Hawaiian men. That’s the real motivation behind coaching," Pieper said.

Pieper played for Ramie and served as an assistant coach from 2002 to ’10, a span during which the Warriors reached the state tournament semifinals five times and played for the title on three occasions. They captured the state championship in 2003.

Pieper was a football and baseball standout while at Kamehameha. He was drafted out of high school by the New York Yankees, but chose to attend UCLA, where he again played both sports and went to the College World Series with the Bruins in 1997. After college, he signed as a free agent with the Kansas City Royals and played three seasons, advancing to Double-A.

Anuenue to forfeit game against Kaiser

Anuenue will forfeit its high school football game against Kaiser, which was scheduled for Friday at Kaiser.

Na Koa coach Kealoha Wengler said the team was down to 13 players — about half the squad — ready for practice on Monday.

As of Tuesday, Anuenue hadn’t officially informed the OIA of its intention to forfeit the game, but will likely do so today.

"We were barely able to finish out the game against Pearl City (a 50-7 loss last weekend)," Wengler said. "We had a lot of people playing out of position. We always try to finish what we start, but in this case, for this game, we won’t be able to start."

UH women’s golf team places sixth

Hawaii freshman Izzy Leung finished at 3-over 218 to place sixth in the Bronco Fall Classic golf tournament on Tuesday at Falcon Crest Golf Course in Kuna, Idaho.

Santa Clara captured the team title at 875, ahead of host Boise State (882). Hawaii (911) finished in sixth place.

Patacchia, Zietz bounced from Hurley Pro

Hawaii surfers Fred Patacchia and Sebastian Zietz lost their third-round heats at the Hurley Pro on Tuesday at Lower Trestles in San Clemente, Calif. Patacchia lost to Adriano De Souza of Brazil, and Zietz lost to Michel Bourez of Tahiti in the ASP World Championship Tour contest.

BYUH defeats Chaminade in soccer

Goals by Colby Bauer, Mike Moreno and Brady Berry led BYUH to a 3-0 men’s soccer win over Chaminade on Tuesday in Honolulu.
